The veterinary Science pathway will help prepare students for a career as a veterinarian or veterinary technician. Veterinarians care for the health of animals and work to improve public health. They diagnose, treat, and research medical conditions and diseases of pets, livestock, and other animals. The courses available at YHS will help students gain the knowledge and skills needed to succeed and continue their education in the field of veterinary medicine.
The median annual wage for veterinarians is $89,000. Salaries can range from 52,000 - 160,000 annually. Employment of veterinarians is projected to grow 18% by 226, much faster than the average for all occupations.
Veterinary Medicine has advanced considerably. Today's veterinarians are able to offer many services that are comparable to healthcare for humans, including more complicated procedures such as cancer treatments and kidney transplants.It is the goal of the Ysleta High School Veteriary Program to provide students four years of valuable training and experiences to help them apply to competitive veterinary schools.
Courses Offered in Pathway
Principles of Health Science - students are prvided an overview of the therapeutic, diagnostic, health informatics, supprt services, and biotechnology research and development systems of the health care industry.
Health Science Theory - students are provided advanced knowledge and skills related to a wide variety of health careers. Students will employ hands-on experiences for continued knowledge and skill development.
Small Animal Management - students will acquire knowledge and skills related to small animals and the small animal management industry. Small Animal Management may address topics related to small mammals such as dogs, cats, amphibians, reptiles, and birds.
Equine Science - students will acquire knowledge and skills related to equine animal systems and the equine industry. Equine Science may address topics related to horses, donkeys, and mules.
Practicum Veterinary - students are given supervised practical application of knowledge and skills. Practicum experiences can occur in a variety of locations on and off campus.
